Sylvia Nederhoff, founder: "Growing up in a tiny country like The Netherlands in Europe, only 164 km by 262 km, I soon started to flirt with other countries. I travelled a lot and I lived for almost five years in the former British colony of Malta, but for a long time Latin America was a missing link. I read the book 'Journey to Q'eros' by Elizabeth B. Jenkins and I think that was the first time I felt a real chemistry with Latin America. More than ever before I wanted to travel to Latin America... In 2002 I packed my backpack and went to Chile. In Santiago I stayed in Providencia, travelled to La Serena in Elqui province and then went down to the south. In Puerto Varas I went horse riding among the salmon in the Petrohue river and took a zodiac boat up the Rio Serano to enter the Torres del Paine National Park - a beautiful ride and a great chance to 'feel' the impact of Patagonia. There are no words to describe my first encounter with this continent. The spark had struck... I felt that warm fuzzy feeling, couldn't stop smiling, was hyperactive, I wanted to discover the entire continent and above all I didn't want to go home. I had fallen in love with Latin America. It's where I feel at home, where I feel safe and above all where I feel connected." |
